enlistment. Sir John Jordan hopes that I can establish a central organisation for all China ports at Shanghai and obtain the assistance of a working committee from members of the British community.

Sir John Jordan specially recommends this appeal to the British community, so I take this opportunity of laying it before your Association, through whose members it can become widely known and on whose loyal co-operation I know I can rely,

The War Office will meet, if possible, abips on arrival and will give all the facilities they can for the enlistment of the volunteers for the now army, but they cannot defray expenses. Volunteers must not be over 35 years of age; height, 5 feet 6 inches; chest, 35 inches; and physically fit,

DEAR SIR,

I beg to enclose copy of letters in connection with the above, from which you will see that a detachment in charge of Captain Hilton-Johnson left on the 16th instant by the "Suwa Maru" which is due at London on the 2nd December..

As these men have left under the auspices of the Association it would be greatly appreciated if representatives of the parent Committee could arrange to meet the men on arrival and welcome them.

I am informed by telegraph by His Majesty's Minister that the War Office wish it known that they welcome British Communities abroad sending volunteers for

SIR,

Shanghai Branch to H.B.M. Consul-General.

Shanghai, 19th October, 1914,

I have the bonour to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 7th October with regard to sending Volunteers to England for enlistment.

This Branch of the Association issued an appeal for funds to its members, and as en outcome have been able to send home 108 men,

I beg to enclose list of those who left by the "Suwa Maru," on the 16th instant, in charge of Captain Hilton-Johnson, Reserve of Officers, Lincolnshire Regiment, this officer and Mr. K. M. Bourne making a total of 110.

In conclusion I would like to add that 16 men left by the French Mail Steamer "Polynesien" on the 26th ultimo, 10 of whom were assisted with passages; and Mr. A. W. Studd, ex Colour-Sergt. of the East Yorkshire Regiment, who left by the P. and O. "Namur" 10 days ago to rejoin his regiment, was likewise assisted.
